If you're looking for a great hike in Glacier View, Lion's Head is the one people ask about. It's the rock outcropping right beside the Matanuska Glacier, and it shows up in enough Alaska advertising that most visitors recognize it before they know its name. The climb is rated difficult and takes about an hour, with real scrambling on the way. The summit looks down a 2,000 foot cliff face to the glacier, with Caribou Creek and the Matanuska River in view, the Talkeetna Range behind you and the Chugach out front. In the fall there's berry picking along the route. Parking is at the top of the hill on the highway, on the right by the telecommunications site. Walk up the dirt road, veer right, and watch for the rock cairn in the alders. For getting on the ice instead of looking down at it, @micaguides runs guided treks out of Mile 102 and has since 1999.
